2008 could be a rough year for social-networking sites, especially in the wake of a big dispute between popular Internet personality Robert Scoble and social-networking site Facebook. Scoble says he wasn't trying to violate anyone's privacy, but rather to prove just how fickle data-collection rules and behaviors are on the Internet. Whether that's true or not is impossible to tell.

Security researcher Ben Edelman says that visitors to a Sears website could be tricked into unwittingly downloading software they don't want. That serves as a great reminder that it's best to always run your computer on a limited-access account for your day-to-day browsing and other computer use. It's not just our advice; Microsoft says so, too.
